Security Council statement of support for Kofi Annan

Brussels, 21/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - The United Nations Security Council adopted a non-binding statement on Wednesday 21 March supporting the efforts by Special Envoy Kofi Annan and calling on the regime and the opposition to apply, fully and without delay, Annan's six-point plan and to work in good faith with him. The text adopted includes the cessation of all forms of armed violence by all parties, under UN supervision, the provision of humanitarian aid to all areas affected by the conflict, the release of arbitrarily detained prisoners, the freedom of Syrians to demonstrate peacefully and of journalists to move around the country, and the launch of a Syrian-led political process to realise the aspirations of the people. If the plan is not implemented, the Council could take further steps, the document says, without giving any indication of what might be involved or making no further mention of additional measures. This was perhaps to satisfy Russia which did not want the statement to contain an ultimatum or any threats. (CG/transl.rt)
