Brussels, 21/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 20 March, Copa-Cogeca welcomed the debate at the European Parliament on a new study examining whether planting rights in the European wine sector should be kept in place or not. With support from MEPs and 15 member states Copa-Cogeca insists that the European system for managing the production potential must be maintained for all types of wine, in order to keep a dynamic wine sector and maintain employment in rural areas of the EU. Copa-Cogeca is “very worried” about what would happen in the EU wine sector if planting rights were to be abolished. The liberalisation of planting rights would cause “major changes to Europe's winegrowing areas and it would add to the existing imbalances in the food chain, to the detriment of the production sector”.
