06/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - Resumption of WTO/Doha talks on industrial customs duties. After a two-year period during which attention has turned to less contentious negotiations on non-tariff barriers, discussions on the Doha Round chapter on industrial goods tariffs (non-agricultural market access, NAMA) will resume in committee at the WTO. The member countries accepted the proposal from the chairman of the NAMA negotiation group, Swiss Ambassador Luzius Wasescha, for a discussion to be held on 14 March on new initiatives on customs duties, following two meetings on 8-9 March and then 12 March, once more devoted to non-tariff issues. Apart from the agricultural chapter, Doha Round progress has been blocked on liberalising the trade in industrial goods, by means of sectoral agreements, which seek to phase out, on a voluntary basis, tariffs in 14 key sectors, such as cars, electronic goods and machinery.
