ETUC condemns possible minimum wage decrease in Greece

Brussels, 06/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), on Monday 6 February, described the imminent decision by the Greek government to reduce the country's minimum salary as “unacceptable”.

ETUC Secretary General Bernadette Ségol said that the decision cutting the minimum wage that could be taken by the Greek government under pressure from the troika runs counter to the agreement among the social partners. “This will quite simply dismantle national collective bargaining agreements and will be a breach of the conventions of the International Labour Office. This is unacceptable”, she stated in a press release. The ETUC intends to put pressure on the European institutions to draw attention to the seriousness of decisions such as this. “Greece is sinking into depression and austerity measures are being imposed on it. This is a disastrous, dead-end policy.” (LC/transl.rt)
