Brussels, 25/01/2012 (Agence Europe) -The European EasyWay project focuses on developing intelligent transport systems (ITS). Those responsible for managing the project would like reassurances that a third project cycle will be taken into account in the European Commission funding priorities.
The project is funded by the European Commission and supervised by the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency (TEN-T EA). It brings together 27 member states and 150 stakeholders from the road haulage industry and seeks to reduce traffic jams and accidents by 25% and CO2 emissions by 10%. The results so far obtained at European level were presented during a conference organised by Antonio Cancian (EPP, Italy) at the European Parliament on Tuesday 24 January. Participants included different MEPs, including the two rapporteurs for the European interconnection mechanism, Dominique Riquet (EPP, France) and Inés Ayala Sender (S&D, Spain). Christopher North, the head of the TEN-T EA unit, said that the mechanism could help place the ITS on the list of the Commission's priorities. This is one possible solution for the EasyWay project's continuation but the director of DG Move (in charge of innovation and sustainable mobility), Fotis Karamitsos, was keen to point out that the project required “strong management” and needed to produce visible results.
