Denmark goes for low cost Presidency

Copenhagen, 10/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - Danish European Affairs Minister Nicolai Wammen promised on Monday 9 January that the Danish Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers would be “low cost”. It has set aside a budget of €35 million, compared with the €115 million for the Polish Presidency. “We don't want to hand out any lessons to others, however”, he said. “We will have fewer people working for the Presidency but they will be very competent”, he added. The minister stated that the government “will try to use public transport”. There will be fewer ministerial meetings and fewer gifts presented. The most costly will be an alarm clock costing €90, revealed a Danish diplomat. “This is the last time you will see bottles of water on the table. The next time, it will be jugs of water from the tap”, Wammen told journalists, each of whom received either a tie or a head square from the Presidency, during a press visit to Copenhagen.
