Brussels, 30/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - The head office of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) is to hold its 6th session in Tunis (Tunisia) on 2 December to symbolically mark its solidarity with the host country, the first to have accomplished its political transition in the hope of also establishing local democracy. Within ARLEM, one recalls that the first uprisings were born of frustration among the people of the regions of the interior who felt they had been left outside the development process conceived and implemented with EU support.
Participants expected to attend include the secretary general of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), Youssef Amrani, and a representative of the European Commission, Marcus Cornaro, Director, who is invited to clarify the process for review of European neighbourhood policy and its funding. Other Tunisian political figures will also attend.
During the meeting, stock will be taken with an inventory to be drawn up on the basis of ARLEM reports on desertification and climate change, renewable energies, small and medium-sized enterprises, and the safeguarding of cultural heritage. ARLEM is co-chaired by the European Committee of the Regions. (FB/transl.jl)
