Brussels, 16/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 16 November, the European Parliament reached an agreement (with the Council) in its first reading on European Union action for a European heritage label. By adopting the recommendation by Chrysoula Paliadeli (S&D, Greece), the EP has given its effective support to the Council's position in its first reading, which retains the majority of Parliamentary amendments. As from 2013, each EU member state will be able to propose (if it so wishes), two candidate sites in view of allocating a European Heritage label. The proposals, submitted every two years, will be examined by a jury of 13 independent experts who will chose a maximum of one site per country. The label will guarantee the quality of selected sites such as monuments, natural, submerged, archeological, industrial or urban sites, cultural landscapes, places of remembrance, cultural goods and objects or intangible heritage associated with a place. The label may also be awarded to contemporary heritage, for relevance to Europe's common history and heritage, rather than its architectural or aesthetic merits. (LC/transl.fl)
