EP backs homosexual rights

Brussels, 28/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Parliament adopted a resolution on Wednesday 28 September (by the substantial majority of 442 votes to 104, with 40 abstentions) calling for an end to the discrimination and violence suffered by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people on a daily basis both in the EU and outside it. At the plenary session debate on Tuesday, Michael Cashman, speaking on behalf of the S&D Group, said that to be able to promote human, rights outside the EU, the Union must apply them in its member states. The rights of LGBT people are not always fully observed within the EU, he said. These rights include the right to the security of person, the right to privacy, the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the right to freedom of assembly, the right not suffer discrimination, the right to freedom of movement and the right to asylum, the resolution states. MEPs also roundly condemn the fact that homosexuality, bisexuality and trans-sexuality are still regarded as mental illnesses, requiring psychiatric treatment, in some countries, including some EU member states, and they call for this to stop. Parliament points to the obligation of EU member states to grant asylum to people from non-EU countries fleeing persecution based on their sexual orientation. (CG/transl.rt)
