Bové calls for schist gas moratorium

Wroc³aw, 20/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - In Wroc³aw on Monday 19 September, MEP José Bové (Greens/EFA, France) used the informal Energy Council to attract media attention for his opposition to the extraction of schist gas in Poland. He would like to see a Europe-wide moratorium which “would freeze schist gas extraction”. “We need a real study on the impact schist gas will have on climate. Studies carried out in the United Kingdom and the United States show that the process for extracting schist gas will speed up global warming”, he said. He hopes to awaken minds and consciences in Poland, where there is no protest movement on the scale of France's. He has called for tough European rules and political awareness. “All the studies that have been carried out show that deep fracturing can spread to water tables. In the United Kingdom, two earth tremors occurred simultaneously after hydraulic fracturing, in areas where there had never been any tremors. Interfering with mother rock at present, with the current state of our knowledge, is completely crazy”, he stated. (VW/transl.rt)
