Brussels, 19/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - Head of the EU diplomatic corps Catherine Ashton has called for calm in northern Kosovo. On Thursday 15 September, a EULEX team was deployed to restore customs controls on Kosovo's northern border in an operation in which an Albanian policeman was killed (see EUROPE 10454). “I call on everybody in northern Kosovo to show restraint and remain calm. It is in the interest of all sides to defuse tensions … and act responsibly. Violence would be unacceptable”, said Ashton in a press release. She has received proposals from the Serbian government on how to resolve the situation at the border. Ashton is expected to meet Serbian President Boris Tadiæ at the 66th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. She said that “the implementation of the agreement on customs stamps is without prejudice to the question of status. It is about free trade and improving the rule of law in Kosovo”. (CG/transl.rt)
