Joint resolution on non-communicable diseases is adopted

Brussels, 15/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 15 September, the European Parliament adopted during plenary session in Strasbourg a joint resolution on the EU's position and commitment before the high level United Nations meeting on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases. The text calls for strong political commitment from the European Commission and member states, taking into account the importance and severity of global epidemics of non-communicable diseases. It urges the EU to approve five key commitments, to be included in the political statement to be adopted after the United Nations meeting on 19-21 September - and among other things to reduce, by 2025, the preventable mortality rate due to non-communicable diseases by 25%, as proposed by the WHO.
