Brussels, 15/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - Gunnar Hökmark (EPP, Sweden) was of the view that “allocating additional frequencies to mobile internet services is the most important issue to address at the WRC-12. The EU can play a crucial role in pushing this agenda forward”. On Thursday 15 September, the European Parliament adopted the resolution on the EU's policy approach towards the ITU World Radio Communication Conference 2012 (WRC-2012) to be held in Geneva, on 23 January-17 February 2012. Hökmark, who is rapporteur on the radio spectrum, considers that the allocation of 1 200 MHz for mobile data traffic by 2015 is a minimum objective that governments must defend during discussions.
The radio electric spectrum is a public resource that is limited but vital for a growing number of sectors. The EP recommends that an additional part of the spectrum be freed up in a harmonised manner at European and global levels in order to alleviate capacity constraints in mobile networks and encourage new services. The resolution underlines how important it is for member states to speak with a single voice at the WRC. (IL/transl.jl)
