Federal Union now, says Duff

Brussels, 05/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - In a publication entitled “Federal Union Now” (http://www.fedtrust.co.uk/admin/uploads/federal-union-now-book.pdf ) made available on Monday 5 September, Andrew Duff (ALDE, UK) says that a major revision of the EU treaties can no longer be avoided. “The European Union must take a decisive step towards a federal economic government, with common fiscal policies and a larger budget, if it is to save the euro”, it is argued in a press release. Duff advocates: - the creation of an EU treasury; - the integration of the presidencies of the European Commission and European Council; - a pan-European constituency for the election of a certain number of MEPs; - a third Convention to revise the treaties. He wants the new treaty to come into force as soon as it has achieved ratification by only four fifths of member states. (L.C./transl.rt)
