20/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - Nabucco - compromise on Commission negotiating brief. Poland, which currently holds the presidency of the EU Council, has found a compromise with member states on the mandate to be given to the European Commission to negotiate a gas deal with Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan relating to the Nabucco gas pipeline project, the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza of 20 July reports, citing a government source. The compromise, which has still to be endorsed by European energy ministers, would allow the European Commission to launch talks with these two former USSR states after the summer break, in September. Both states are potential gas suppliers for Europe. Nabucco, which will now not be up and running until 2017, is to carry gas from Central Asia under the Caspian Sea then through Turkey, circumventing Russia. (E.H./transl.jl)
