Brussels, 07/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - A European Parliament vote on a controversial new electoral reform was postponed on July 7 as political groups appeared certain to reject the plans. The reforms, drawn up by British Liberal MEP Andrew Duff, were aimed at creating an EU-wide voting constituency for 25 MEPS but many were confused as to how the system would work. “It is certainly true that if you touch on electoral reform, members find this a sensitive and uncomfortable question”, Duff told the assembly in Strasbourg. But, he underlined: “We need to provide that electoral reform to transpose the Lisbon Treaty into an effective reality”. The text was been returned to the constitutional affairs commission to be re-examined. (LoC)
