Brussels, 07/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission will make an announcement on Friday 8 July that will please anchovy fishermen in the Bay of Biscay. It is proposing to set a total allowable catch (TAC) for anchovy in this zone of 29,700 tonnes (t) for the fishing season from July 2011 to June 2012, virtually doubling last year's TAC of 15,000t. A quota of 26,730t will be allocated to Spain, and France will receive a quota of 2,970t. This does not take account of arrangements between the two countries which give French fishermen an additional 20%, plus 100t. The anchovy biomass has tripled, from 36,500t in spring 2010 to 98,450t. The anchovy fishery was closed from 2005 to 2009 to allow the stock to recover. (L.C./transl.rt)
