07/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - Mohammad Yunus finds disciples of micro-credit in Strasbourg. Micro-credit and the social economy can play a role in the European Union's future growth. This, at least, was the opinion expressed by three French members of the EPP Group at the European Parliament after they met with Mohammad Yunus in Strasbourg on Wednesday 6 July. Yunus was Nobel Peace Laureate in 2006 for having introduced and generalised the use of micro-credit in Bangladesh, and a little everywhere else in Asia. Damien Abad, Sophie Auconie and Jean-Marie Cavada are now to submit a draft resolution to the assembly underlining the importance of this economic model. They will be calling on the European Commission for an initiative to foster micro-credit in the Union and for the creation of a special social economy fund. Yunus was welcomed by Commission President José Manuel Barroso who said how much he appreciated his work and that the Commission would continue to provide assistance and support for micro-credit throughout the world.
