Brussels, 29/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - Three calls for proposals amounting to a total of €180 million to fund infrastructure projects were announced by the Commission on Wednesday 29 June in the context of the multiannual programme for the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). This year's call focuses on three priority areas for the Commission in order to make transport within the Union more competitive and sustainable. These are: the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), the Motorways of the Sea (MoS), and the River Information Services (RIS). Rail wins most of the budget with €100 million allocated to improving traffic management and interoperability, closely followed by the maritime sector with €70 million made available for decongestion of roads through viable maritime alternatives; and, finally, €10 million at most will go to inland navigation and inland navigation traffic management. The aim of making these modes of transport more attractive and safe is undisputed compared to the other modes of transport. Siim Kallas, European Transport Commissioner, was pleased with these calls for proposals, saying that financing such projects will make our infrastructures more effective thanks to the use of more successful traffic management and information systems, and by shifting road freight to other modes of transport, such as rail or navigation, via the development of green transport corridors.
