Brussels, 27/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - The three European institutions seem determined to conclude negotiations on the legislative package reinforcing the Stability and Growth Pact by the end of June, as the European Council has twice called on them to do (EUROPE 10404 and 10405). “This shows the credibility of our efforts', stressed the spokesperson to Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn, on Monday 27 June. At the European Parliament, the goal is still to allow the plenary to be in a position to vote on the final compromise next week. Informal discussions are continuing outside the usual trialogue meetings, to bring the positions of the Council and of the EP closer together on the main outstanding point. The MEPs are calling for the Council, in the Pact's preventative plank, to adopt, “by reverse qualified majority”, a recommendation of the European Commission stipulating that a country has not taken the necessary steps to remedy a deficit/excessive indebtedness. A majority of countries are refusing to reduce their political room for manoeuvre. One possibility could be for the entry into force of this provision to be postponed. (M.B./transl.fl)
