Method for setting 2012 mackerel quotas on agenda

Brussels, 24/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - European fisheries ministers, meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday 28 June, will discuss the method proposed by the European Commission on 25 May for setting total allowable catches (TACs) and quotas for 2012. Some countries take the opportunity to express their disagreement with the ideas of Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki. The Commission is proposing to split negotiations on fishing quotas into two (November and December), to reduce catches by 25% when there is no scientific advice on the state of the stock, and systematically to follow the scientific advice based on the MSY (maximum sustainable yield) approach. Ireland is expected to call on the Council to impose sanctions on Iceland which granted itself huge mackerel quotas. Ministers will also discuss the future of the European Fisheries Fund (for 2014-2020). (L.C./transl.rt)
