Brussels, 27/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 27 May, the Telecommunications Council adopted conclusions on the World Radiocommunication Conference, to be held from 23 January to 17 February 2012 in Geneva by the International Telecommunications Union. The European Commission published a communication in April 2011 in which it sets out the European Union's position on subjects to be raised at the conference and on how it plans to negotiate on them, in the name of the EU. The aim of the conference in Geneva is to decide how the airwaves are defined, allocated and used without harmful interference between the various wireless services around the world. In its conclusions, the Council welcomes the Commission's communication, and points out what objectives are to be reached, including the following: - the digital dividend, short-range devices, air traffic management systems, broadcasting satellite services, software defined radio and cognitive radios, electronic news gathering, scientific services and spectrum requirements for systems such as Galileo. Member states are invited to do everything possible for these objectives to be taken into account in the talks and the Commission is invited to report rapidly on results. (I.L./transl.jl)
