In a letter sent to John Monks on Tuesday 17 May as he prepares to stand down from his post as Secretary General of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Philippe de Buck, head of the employers' federation, “wishes him all the best for the future”. He could not prevent himself from making reference to a recently published article by Monks, entitled “Goodbye Brussels”. De Buck says that cannot share Monks' view that Europe is in a worse position now than eight years ago when he took up his post.
