Dialogue on Kosovo, Belgrade believes results are possible

Brussels, 03/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - Belgrade said that it is optimistic about the technical dialogue begun in March with Kosovo under the auspices of the EU (EUROPE 10330) and which could achieve some concrete results. The Serbian minister in charge of Kosovo, Goran Bogdanovic, declared on Tuesday 3 May, that compromises were possible and results could be achieved soon. Talks were launched on 8 March in Brussels. The Serbs were represented by Borko Stefanovic (senior official at the foreign office) and the Kosovan vice prime minister, Edita Tahiri. They were chaired by Robert Cooper from the European External Action Service (EEAS) and focused on practical subjects such as the free movement of persons, trade, telecommunications and access to civil state registers. Bogdanovic informed the press agency, Beta, that “the three rounds of discussion (Ed: which have taken place up until now) demonstrated that compromise was possible, even on extremely sensitive and difficult subjects”. None of the subjects so far discussed have yet been settled but discussions are on the right track, explained the Serbian minister. He said that “for a long time, we have held positions that have been extremely opposed to each other and there had not been any hope for compromise. Nevertheless, these three days (of discussions) have shown that results can be obtained”. In total, 15 of the 20 subjects are expected to be tackled during the dialogue. The goal of the dialogue is not, however, to settle the dispute between Belgrade and Pristina about Kosovo's status. (H.B./transl.fl)
