Constitutive meeting for “prosperity of all citizens”

Brussels, 03/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - In the future, we will find out whether the constitutive meeting of the EURONEST parliamentary assembly on Tuesday 3 May in Brussels, was worthy of this description. For the president of the European Parliament, however, Jerzy Buzek, this meeting of 50 national parliamentarians from Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Moldavia) and 60 MEPs was “historic”. He said that it was “a forum of the people, by the people and for the people whose aim is to help build vibrant democracies, free market economies and foster the rule of law”. The president of the EP said: “Today's meeting is a major step towards closer cooperation that we hope will ensure prosperity for all citizens in the region”. Parliamentarians from Belarus would not be invited, however, until “the country holds free and fair elections”, explained Buzek. (H.B./transl.fl)
