Brussels, 18/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 14 April, the leadership of the Party of European Socialists (PES) adopted a set of stringent measures to ensure the highest standards in public office. This strong declaration comes after the recent corruption scandals that came to light in the European Parliament. The text, “Ethics in Politics - For Strong Moral Conduct through a Strong Moral Code”, underlines the idea that, in principle, for Members of the European Parliament, “one salary should be enough”. Central to the pledge, adopted by the PES Presidency, is the idea that Members of the European Parliament should not be entitled to receive private remuneration linked to their mandate. The Socialists are calling for: - clear and transparent rules and requirements on links with business, financial interests and contacts with lobbyists (this information is to be published in a regularly updated register); - a code of conduct for MEPs and stricter rules on interaction between MEPs and lobbyists.
