Brussels, 15/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - Nuclear safety will be the focus of European Commission President José Manuel Barroso's visit to Ukraine from 18 to 20 April. After a bilateral meeting on Monday with President Viktor Yanukovich of Ukraine, the head of the European executive arm is to open, on Tuesday, the Kiev summit on nuclear safety, which is to chart the way forward to strengthened cooperation and capacity at the international level with a view to preventing and limiting nuclear accidents. Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs will accompany Barroso. He will attend a donors' conference on Wednesday for the Chernobyl nuclear plant, which has been in the process of decommissioning since the 1986 disaster, with a view to raising the funding necessary for making the site completely safe by 2015.
