Investing in education and youth mobility

Brussels, 13/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - In an own initiative report adopted on Tuesday 12 April at the European Parliament's culture and education committee, MEPs underlined their support for increasing funds to youth mobility programmes, mutual recognition of qualifications, strengthening the ties between education and the workplace, encouraging paid intern schemes and adopting measures for combating discrimination in the education sector. MEPs welcome the European Commission's new “Youth on the Move” initiative and the aim of ensuring that 40% of young people obtain higher education or vocational diplomas. MEPs emphasise that member states should invest at least 2% of their GDP in higher education and adopt measures that ensure that the percentage of early school leavers is below 10%. The Parliamentary committee also called on enhanced dialogue with youth organisations and greater youth participation in decision-making. (I.L./transl.fl)
