Viviane Reding speaks out against intimidation of Roma

Brussels, 13/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - In Luxembourg on Tuesday 12 April, European Commissioner for Justice and Fundamental Rights Viviane Reding spoke out against intimidation made by an extreme-right Hungarian militia group against the Roma population, describing it as “unacceptable that a Roma citizen has been threatened like this”, as she told the meeting of European justice ministers. Reding also called on the national legal authorities to “act” on the basis of their own law and of European law, she continued. The Hungarian justice minister, Tibor Navracsics, said that these incidents also took place in other member states, but stressed that “Hungarian public opinion does not agree with this”, and added that “we are going to protect all of our citizens”. On Tuesday morning, the justice ministers and representatives of the ministers of the EU27 held a short debate over resources for marginalised communities, including the Roma, to have access to justice, discussing current obstacles. The European Commission once again raised the European strategy for the inclusion of the Roma, which was presented in Strasbourg in early April, and which calls on the member states to set in place national inclusion strategies to bear fruit within 10 years.
