Brussels, 13/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - On 26 April in Paris, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) of the Council of Europe is meeting for a round table discussion on the follow-up to the recommendations provided in its 2010 report on France. Three of these recommendations will be re-examined in 2012: - full support for the tasks of the High Authority against Discrimination and for Equality (HALDE); - strengthening the fight against forms of racist expression propagated via the internet; - implementation of solutions, in consultation with the Traveller community, allowing for the effective and ongoing schooling of itinerant or semi-itinerant Traveller children, adapted to their lifestyle.
ECRI points out that in its fourth report on France (June 2010), it had underlined that the situation remained worrying in certain areas, such as the perception of the police by minority groups, prejudice against Muslims, and the tone of the public debate on immigration.
This round table is organised in partnership with the French National Consultative Commission on Human Rights (CNCDH) and HALDE. It brings together representatives from the public authorities, and the Parliament and Senate, as well as representatives from the legal system, academia, civil society and the trade unions. Discussions will focus on racism and xenophobia in public discourse, the fight against racist expression propagated via the internet, the fight against racism and discrimination against Muslims, monitoring racism and racial discrimination, and the legislative and institutional framework of the fight against racial discrimination in France.
