European Central Bank raises interest rate to 1.25%

Brussels, 07/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 7 April, the European Central Bank (ECB) raised the main interest rate from 1% to 1.25%, the first rise since the 2008 financial crisis. In May 2009, the ECB reduced interest rates in the eurozone to 1%, the lowest level since the euro was set up, to encourage economic recovery. The ECB's decision on Thursday came as no surprise to economists and the money markets, expecting further rises in the coming months.
