06/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - EU expected to redefine its eastern neighbourhood policy, says Polish Centre for Eastern Studies (OSW). In a recent report on European Neighbourhood Policy East, the Polish Centre for Eastern Studies calls on the EU to review its strategy towards its eastern neighbours in order to prevent “frustration on both sides”, and the possibility that both sides might feign integration. The Centre above all proposes that the EU “set out a clear, strategic message” to the six partnership states, take the risk of greater diversification between these states, and place greater emphasis on democratisation. The report advises the EU not to become more involved at this stage in resolving “frozen conflicts” until it has instruments allowing it to deliver. “The EU still does not have the political will or instruments needed for meeting Russia head-on in this field”, states the author of the report, Katarzyna Peleczynska Nalecz, who heads the Brussels arm of OSW. The report, which was published as part of a joint research project with the Institut français des relations internationales (Ifri) may be consulted in its English version at: http://www.osw.waw.pl/en/publikacje/osw-studies/2011-2014-02/integration-or-imitation-eu-policy-towards-its-eastern-neighbours .
