06/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - Hungary's new constitution causes Liberals concern. What is the European Commission going to do to defend fundamental rights if these rights are brought into question by the new constitution on which the Hungarian authorities are currently working? The ALDE president, Guy Verhofstadt of Belgium, expressed concern at the fact that the constitution could contain provisions on minority voting rights, abortion, territorial claims and so on. Answering this bold question among others put to the Commission president, Barroso replied that the responsibility of drafting a constitution is incumbent upon the leaders of the country that adopts it. He hoped that the new Hungarian constitution would reflect values recognised by the Union as its own. Barroso went on to say that he has not yet seen a country that goes against such principles. This being to the contrary, he said, “we will act”. (L.G./transl.jl)
