Barroso and Füle begin Balkan visit

Brussels, 06/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Commission José Manuel Barroso and Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle will be on a two-day visit to the Balkans, from 7 to 9 April. Their visit will take them to Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). In all these countries, talks are scheduled with the highest political authorities and with civil society representatives. Barroso and Füle's main message will be that of confirming the European prospects of all Balkan states. They will, however, also underline the need to pursue reforms in order to move forward along the road to European integration. “The countries of South Eastern Europe belong in the EU. But it is for the leaders and people of the region to determine the pace and the timing of their European future”, Barroso said before leaving on the trip. “I will encourage the leaders of our partner countries to accelerate their reforms (…). Now is the time to deliver”, he said. (H.B./transl.jl)
