High speed for a more united society

Brussels, 18/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 17 March, the education and culture committee unanimously adopted an opinion on the setting up of basic high speed digital services for all citizens by 2013 throughout EU territory. This is one of the goals of the European Commission in its digital strategy. The aim of the parliamentary committee is to underline the importance of quality content on screen and the access to knowledge provided by high speed digital services, said the rapporteur Malika Benarab-Attou (Greens/EFA, France). The text also highlights the importance of public financial support for the development of high speed services in sparsely populated areas. Also, high speed connection, especially in schools, should be a funding priority throughout the territories, said Benarab-Attou, who stressed it was a matter of turning a simple means of communication into a tool for the promotion of a united society while respecting EU commitments within the 2020 objectives.
