25/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - European satellite navigation system enhances air passenger safety. The European Commission will shortly launch the EGNOS Safety-of-Life Service for aviation, which will offer the aviation industry means to increase passenger safety. The EGNOS system will enable precision landing approaches and make air navigation safer. It will also reduce delays, diversions and flight cancellations. EGNOS was launched in October 2009, but was previously only available for “open service” applications, such as personal navigation and precision farming. The system will now be made available for use in aviation. EGNOS is made up of transponders aboard three geostationary satellites and an interconnected ground network of 40 positioning stations and four control centres. The EGNOS coverage area includes most European states and will be further expanded. (L.C./transl.rt)
