Only a fraction of the €60 billion so far still needed to fund the modernisation and expansion of EU electricity infrastructure by 2020 will come from the Community budget, the Energy Commissioner told a conference on 10 February, which was also attended by representatives of the electricity transmission system operators association (ETSO). This limited European funding will serve as a lever to attract innovative funding, said Günther Oettinger, who will present draft funding plans in June, as part of the debate on the multiannual financial framework post-2013.
