Brussels, 26/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EU has urged the new Lebanese prime minister, Najib Mikati, to form a government based on “as broad a consensus as possible” and “in full compliance with the Constitution”. In a declaration dated 20 January, Catherine Ashton affirmed: “I expect that the new government will continue to respect Lebanon's international obligations”. She also said that she was “concerned” about the violent protests that supporters of outgoing prime minister, Saad Hariri (who denounced the appointment of Mikati), had carried out in the country. The high representative said that all parties should show restraint and “cooperate in the spirit of dialogue”. (H.B./transl.fl)
