Brussels, 26/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission must ensure that its legislative proposals for the reform of the common agricultural policy (CAP), expected in June, include measures to support the improvement of crop farming to overcome the EU protein deficit and reduce price volatility. That is the call from the European Parliament agriculture committee in a report by Martin Häusling (Greens/EFA, Germany) on the EU's old problem of vegetable protein deficit, adopted on Wednesday 26 January.
GMOs. The committee asks the Commission to assess the impact of current import tariffs and trade agreements on oilseed and protein crops and to introduce a new programme to promote training on producing leguminous protein plants. It asks the Commission to report on the impact of the zero tolerance rule for non-authorised GMOs in imported animal feed and to consider introducing limit values. The report also calls on the Commission to ensure adequate supply of soya to the EU by providing a technical solution on the low level presence of non-authorised GMOs in imported protein crops.
