19/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - Greenpeace and the “battle of the grids”. Renewable energy - wind farms in the North and solar parks in the South - could meet 68% of the EU's electricity needs by 2030, and 99.5% by 2030, argues environmental NGO Greenpeace in a report unveiled on Tuesday 18 January. If this is to be so, governments will have to be persuaded to end priority access to grids for electricity produced by nuclear plants and provide substantial investment, estimated at €70 billion by 2030, with a further €28 billion by 2050, to develop infrastructure and grids. With this document, Greenpeace is seeking to try to influence the decisions of European leaders at the special summit devoted to energy in Brussels on 4 February. (E.H./transl.rt)
