Hungary to pursue digital agenda objectives

Brussels, 05/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - Communication and Information Technology (CIT) is playing an increasingly important role in the daily lives of European citizens. Based on this observation, the European Commission has published a “Digital Strategy for Europe”, which intends to promote economic recovery and competitiveness through horizontal measures and inter-sectoral action plans.

Pursuing the Digital Strategy objectives. A “digital general assembly” will be organised for the first time in June 2011. All the different stakeholders will be participating in it. The Commission will publish its first digital scoreboard and give the results from the strategy's first year, as well as publicising the main objectives. The Hungarian Presidency will continue its work in this perspective.

Network security. Cyber security will also be one of the Hungarian Presidency's priorities. In an effort to consolidate defence against attacks that could endanger communication networks, Hungary will work towards finalising the ongoing negotiations on the modernisation of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA). In April, the Hungarian Presidency will organise a ministerial conference on protecting critical information technology infrastructure.

A spectrum harmonised policy. Spectrum radio frequency will be the third priority action area of the presidency. Given the crucial importance of good radio frequency management for ensuring the smooth development of new applications included in mobile telephones and the internet, the Hungarian Presidency intends to continue negotiations on the first European programme on spectrum policy, as advocated by the Commission last September, on which it hopes to attain a political agreement. Global Spectrum harmonisation is another important Presidency consideration, which intends to begin preparatory work for the forthcoming 2012 World Radio Communications Conference, at which it will attempt to put forward common European interests.
