Etno to defend Internet viability model in 2011

Brussels, 05/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - Europe's telecoms and electronic communications operators association (ETNO) will pursue two major objectives in 2011. It will examine ways of guaranteeing the current economic model for internet viability despite the growth in traffic, created mainly by new video applications. It will also examine how to stimulate the colossal investment required for new generation networks, as suggested in the European Commission's Digital Agenda. Luigi Gambardella (from Telecom Italia, which will be responsible for running ETNO's Executive Board this year) stated: “Without any change to the current model there is a significant risk that the increasing congestion will impact on the entire value chain, to the detriment of all internet market players and of growth and innovation in the EU”. Gambardella also underlined the necessity of stimulating investment in the ultra-fast networks in the European Union, to the benefit of citizens and internet market specialist alike.
