07/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - Baltic ban on high-grading. On Monday 6 December, the EU Council of Ministers adopted, without debate, the regulation to keep in place the ban on high-grading of catches and also the restrictions on fishing for flounder and turbot in the Baltic Sea, the Belts and the Sound. These measures have been built into the 2005 regulation on technical measures, when hitherto they had formed part of the 2009 regulation on fishing quotas for 2010 in the Baltic Sea. The regulation states: “Any species which is subject to a quota and which is caught during fishing operations shall be brought aboard the vessel and subsequently landed.” The aim is to bring an end to discards, where unwanted fish are thrown back dead into the sea.
