07/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - Justice guaranteed for children. The EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) held a conference on justice available to children in Brussels on 6-7 December. Some 300 experts put forward proposals on how to improve the access of vulnerable children in the EU to justice. “European legal systems have been created for adults. There is still a long way to go for our legal system really to be adapted to the needs and rights of vulnerable children”, said FRA Director Morten Kjaerum. The conference looked at cases where children were victims of domestic violence, were separated or unaccompanied asylum seekers, victims of trafficking or had learning difficulties. FRA presented its 2010 report “Separated, asylum-seeking children in EU Member States” which demonstrates that the rights of children in this situation are often ignored or breached. (B.C./transl.rt)
