Brussels, 03/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - In his capacity as representative of the current EU Council Presidency, the Belgian ambassador to Burma met the Burmese opposition figure, Aung San Suu Kyi, at her place of residence on Friday 3 December. He expressed the EU's support for the Nobel Peace Prize winner who was released on 13 November, according to a press release from Belgian Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere. “As the ballot on 7 November has not brought about the hoped-for opening, Belgium, like the other EU member states, feels it is its duty to support the democratic opposition in general and Aung San Suu Kyi in particular. It is essential that the voice of the democratic opposition, like that of the ethnic minorities and civil society, be heard”, the president-in-office of the General Affairs Council, Steven Vanackere commented. He also pointed out that the release of some 2,100 political prisoners in Myanmar remains a priority. (H.B./transl.jl)
