Brussels, 03/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - The environment plays a role in fashioning South-South migration, and migration can be considered a strategy of adaptation. However, movements of people, particularly large-scale movements, can also have an adverse effect on the environment, the ACP Observatory states. Hence the appeal made by this research body on Friday 3 December for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change (UNFCCC) to carry out an in-depth analysis of the relationship between migration, the environment and climate change. “Recent events such as the tsunami in South East Asia or the floods in Pakistan show that natural disasters cause massive migratory movements”, said Laurent de Boeck, Director of the Observatory. Susanne Melde, an expert in migration, points out that the relationship between natural disasters, gradual environmental changes and migration is not direct but rather defined as the interaction of a number of socio-economic and demographic factors.
