Buzek calls for end to violence against women

Brussels, 23/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - Speaking in Strasbourg on Monday, European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek welcomed the recent release of Aung San Suu Kyi, whom he has invited to attend the next plenary session of the Parliament. He also expressed his support for the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, on 25 November.

Buzek urged MEPs to wear rose petals to show their support for the elimination of “all forms of physical and psychological violence” against women. He said that, throughout the world, women suffer violence and humiliation, and are the victims of rape. Eight thousand girls suffer genital mutilation every day, he said. He highlighted that Parliament had, for many years, advocated measures to prevent such abuse. (G.B./transl.rt)
