Brussels, 23/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 22 November, the Foreign Affairs Council discussed the current political situation as well as prospects in Burma/Myanmar after the release of Aung San Suu Kyi on 13 November. For now, the EU27 prefer to wait and see. They wish, in particular, to see whether the liberation of the main opposition leader is an isolated act on the part of the Burmese junta or whether it is part of a broader opening up movement before, possibly, envisaging the relaxation of European sanctions in place (visa ban, freeze of assets, restricted diplomatic relations, import ban on certain products such as wood, metals and minerals, and an embargo on arms deliveries). The EU above all calls for all political prisoners to be released. “We believe that it is essential that all remaining political detainees are released without delay and that all actors of the opposition can participate in the political life of the country”, Catherine Ashton told the press after the Council.
