Brussels, 23/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - Regional Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn has welcomed the adoption by over one hundred mayors of major cities around the globe of the Mexico City Pact. With their signatures, the mayors demonstrated their commitment to reducing CO2 emissions in their cities and to tackling climate change.
In a statement, Hahn said that “cities can and must play a pivotal role in the reduction of CO2 emissions”. He stated that currently more than 70% of the population of Europe lives in metropolitan areas and that over 70% of CO2 emissions are produced in urban areas. The commissioner lent his support to the Global Cities Covenant on Climate voluntarily to reduce CO2 emissions. “This pact fits in with the goals of the European Commission, committed to CO2 reduction, and the EUROPE 2020 strategy, which aims at smart, sustainable and inclusive growth,” he said.
