Report on transatlantic air alliances

Brussels, 17/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - On 16 November, the European Commission and the American Department of Transport (DOT) published a report which sums up the main conclusions of a joint research project aiming to improve understanding of developments of transatlantic air services.

The report describes the evolution of the aeronautical industry in both legal systems, explains the emergence of alliances and looks into the latest trends. It also compares the respective legal regimes of the EU and the United States and the analytical frameworks used by both administrations to examine competition on this market.

In light of a growing trend of alliances between airlines on transatlantic routes, this project, which was launched in 2008, is the first stage of a process which aims to establish closer cooperation between the two administrations on a competitive analysis of these alliances. The objective is to find compatible approaches to competition issues in this sector. (F.G./transl.fl)
